Professor Sutton is a professor of bioengineering, the technical director of the Biomedical Imaging Center at the Beckman Institute, and an affiliate of the neuroscience program and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He also serves as a Health Innovation Professor at the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, is a fellow at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and is an investigator with CZ Biohub Chicago.

With more than 20 years of experience as a magnetic resonance imaging physicist, Professor Sutton develops acquisition and image reconstruction techniques for functional and structural MRI in humans and animals. His research emphasizes precise measurement of physiological variations in the brain—including structure, function, blood flow, and stiffness—across interventions, aging, nutrition, development, and disease.

Professor Sutton has authored more than 200 peer‑reviewed journal articles, over 200 conference papers, and holds nine patents related to novel imaging techniques. He is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.
