The department of bioengineering is excited to welcome Dave Rogalski as our newest academic advisor. With over a decade of experience and a passion for helping students, Dave promises to be a crucial addition to support our ever-growing student body. In this Q&A, Dave shares more about his history, what brought him to Illinois, and what most excites him about his new role.
Tell us about your background. Where are you from and what roles have you held prior to this position?
"I was born and raised in Davenport, Iowa, and grew up in a big family (one of five sons). Both of my parents were first-generation college students who pursued careers in education, so I like to say working in higher education is the family business! I completed all of my schooling in Iowa through the culmination of my master’s program at Iowa State University, where I earned my degree in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies with an emphasis in Student Affairs Administration. My goal was to blend academic and student affairs best practices to influence undergraduate student success. I was fortunate to see that play out early in my career as Director of Student Life at Waldorf University in Forest City, Iowa, followed by my role as Assistant Director of the Drexel Learning Center at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While I thoroughly enjoyed my exposure to the administrative ranks, I realized I was most passionate working directly with students, so I transitioned to academic advising. I served as an academic advisor at the University of Colorado at Boulder for 12 years before recently returning to the Midwest to provide caretaking assistance for a family member. After wrapping up caregiving duties earlier this summer, I was able to interview for the open advising position in the department of bioengineering and join the team in early September."
What drew you to this position in bioengineering?
"In looking to grow my advising skill set, I set out to find a role that would allow me the opportunity to engage a different student population than what I was used to supporting. I had some awesome interactions with engineering students at my previous institution, so supporting engineering students full-time was the most compelling element about the advisor position. Furthermore, I have deep respect and admiration for those working in academia who are evolving research and technologies to progress the healthcare industry. Having recently lost a parent who suffered from neurodegenerative decline and providing caregiving for another parent who benefited from state-of-the-art diagnostics to help treat his conditions, I was immediately drawn to the mission of the department of bioengineering. The stars aligned perfectly to allow me to apply for this incredible opportunity as I wrapped up my caregiving duties."
What are you most enjoying about the role so far?
"Being part of a dynamic team! The welcome I received from my new colleagues when I started a few weeks ago made me feel right at home. I have been so impressed with the supportive atmosphere that permeates throughout the building. It is evident that everyone takes pride in their individual contribution towards advancing the department mission. Of course, it has also been great building connections with our students. I have enjoyed every interaction with them and look forward to contributing to their future success."
What is your favorite advice for students?
"I like to encourage students to embrace the vibrant campus community as quickly as they can. There are many support mechanisms and thoughtful faculty and staff who are here to help “shrink” the size of the University to help position them for holistic success. I've found that the sooner a student can build meaningful connections, the more comfortable they become navigating their academic journey. Additionally, these connections empower them to create a strong campus network, which serves as a springboard for future success after graduation."
What do you like to do outside of work?
"Being new to the area, I look forward to exploring the neighborhoods, parks, and local establishments in addition to our beautiful campus. I love to spend time outdoors exploring nature and fishing. I do try to get my “steps” in every day, so I like to be active in the fitness center and as time allows, practice my golf swing! I’m also excited to engage in the wide variety of campus events and activities including cheering on our Fighting Illini at their sporting events."
Dave’s passion for student success and deep connection to the mission of bioengineering make him a great fit for our department. We look forward to seeing the positive impact he will have on our students and the broader campus community as we continue to grow and thrive.
