Bioengineering graduate student Shachi Mittal, a member of Professor Rohit Bhargava's research group, has won a Nadine Barrie Smith Fellowship, which is awarded to outstanding women graduate students conducting research in the general field of medical imaging (e.g., ultrasound, optical, magnetic resonance) at the Beckman Institute on campus. She is working to build digital molecular histopathology and patient prognosis tools for a paradigm shift in cancer diagnosis and survival predictions.
Mittal is the second Illinois Bioengineering graduate student to receive this fellowship this year—Parinaz Fathi, who is studying biodegradable biliverdin nanoparticles for photoacoustic imaging and photothermal therapy of sentinel lymph node metastases, also won this fellowship.
