Bioengineering Professor Brian Cunningham is one of 13 Illinois faculty members named as Center for Advanced Study (CAS) associates for 2018-2019. CAS associates are granted one semester of teaching release time to pursue an individual scholarly project of merit, in addition to participation in a yearly roundtable discussion of research interests.
Cunningham will pursue his interest in digital resolution biosensing, disease diagnostics, and DNA sequencing using dielectric nanoantenna-microcavity hybrids. An Illinois faculty member since 2011, Cunningham and his Nanosensors research group are at the forefront of point-of-care diagnostics, personalized medicine, global health, and liquid biopsy approaches for monitoring cancer treatment.
The Donald Biggar Willett Professor of Engineering, Cunningham is the director of the Micro + Nanotechnology Lab, a professor in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, and a research theme leader at the Carl Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE), American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), and Optical Society of America (OSA). He was elected to the Natonal Academy of Inventors in 2014.
