Congratulations, Class of 2020!

BS Graduates

Brittany Amawan

Favorite university memory: My favorite memory was when the Everitt Lab first opened up and our department actually had its own building for us to attend lectures in. Everything was completely new and it was nice to have small amenities like chargers for every seat at a table or access to small study rooms.

Immediate future plans: I am happy to begin working for AveXis in Libertyville, IL as a BioProcess Engineer I at the end of May. I am very excited to become a part of a company with a mission to develop life-saving gene therapies that help those with rare genetic diseases!

Future plans (5-10 years): I hope to gain experience and learn more about the treatments that AveXis offers and eventually work my way up to a Research & Development position at their San Diego location.

Favorite university memory: My favorite college memory is a sound. Even in quarantine when I imagine going back to college for the summer I hear it in my plans. When I, along with my friends, failed my first calculus exam, fell off a ski lift, danced in Engineering Hall, avoided work at Legends, and forced people to wear togas in a snow storm, I heard this sound. The sound is laughter, but the type that is barely audible that only comes from laughing so hard that you lose your breath. The sound of my friends and I laughing tie my various college moments into one of my most special memories.

Immediate future plans: I plan to start at Amazon as a hardware biosensor engineer. I am moving to San Francisco and live with a friend I made through the BioE program. I am looking forward to moving from Champaign to a big city!

Future plans (5-10 years): Within the next five to ten years I would like to join the Teach for America program. I hope to also like to spend a month in Italy as well as visit Iceland and hike trails in South East Asia.

I want to give a special shout out to: I would like to first thank my parents, my little brothers and everyone else I consider family. I would want to thank all my friends who helped me get through these last four years and shape them into what they were. I want to shout out Lauren Pritz.

MS/PhD Gradutes

Indrajit Srivastava

Favorite university memory: (i) When my parents came all the way from India for my MS graduation ceremony back in 2017. Hopefully, the situation alleviates soon and traveling returns to normalcy, so that they can attend my PhD graduate, hopefully in December. Fingers crossed.
(ii) I take immense pride in my teaching and mentoring skills. So when I read the reviews from the students for the first course I TAd in grad. school a few years ago, it was definitely gratifying and delightful.

Immediate future plans: Will be doing my postdoc. with Prof. Shuming Nie (BIOE, UIUC) and Prof. Viktor Gruev (ECE, UIUC) working on developing clinically translatable near-infrared probes with the capability to be detected by fluorescence-enabled image-guided surgery goggles.

Future plans (5-10 years): To be an academic professor either in United States, Europe, or back home in India.

I want to give a special shout out to: My advisor Prof. Dipanjan Pan; graduate program co-ordinator Krista Smith; my teaching instructors: Prof. Shuming Nie, Prof. Michael Insana, and Prof. Sergei Maslov; and all my lab members.
