Matthew Schulmerich, a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Engineering, was recently named the winner of the Kasimir Fajans Award in Chemistry for the most outstanding dissertation at the University of Michigan during 2008-2009.
The Kasimir Fajans Award is the Chemistry Department’s highest and most venerable student award. It was established in 1956 in honor of the distinguished contributions to science made by Professor Fajans. It is awarded biennially for the most outstanding dissertation in Chemistry.
The award consists of a certificate and an honorarium with Schulmerich’s name being placed on a bronze plaque displayed in the Chemistry building. As the Fajans awardee, he will present an award colloquium at Michigan in the spring.
Schulmerich is a Department of Defense post-doctoral fellow in Professor Rohit Bhargava’s laboratory at the University of Illinois.
“We are very pleased to have Michigan’s finest working with us,” Bhargava said.
At the University of Michigan, Schulmerich used Raman Spectroscopy, novel optical probe configurations and multivariate signal processing to noninvasively recover spectra of targets below several millimeters of light scattering material including plastics and tissue.
At the University of Illinois, his research includes building instrumentation for spectroscopic mapping, imaging and tomography.
