Fatemeh (Youkabed) Ostadhossein, a third-year Ph.D. candidate in Bioengineering, earned the Gridley McKim Smith Women’s Health Fellowship Award. The fellowship recognizes and supports individuals dedicated to pursuing research on critical women’s health issues such as cardiovascular disease, leading female cancers, hormones’ role in disease and stage-of-life health concerns, diseases or health concerns that disproportionately afflict women, or exploration of gender differences related to the aforementioned topics.

Ostadhossein is a member of the Laboratory for Materials in Medicine, led by Prof. Dipanjan Pan, and her research pursuits are in the field of nanomedicine, imaging probes and targeting cancer stem cells to combat breast cancer. She also is working collaboratively with other members of the laboratory to design a bioabsorbable personalized esophageal stents in collaboration with Dr. Blair Rowitz at Carle Surgery.

"Youkabed is a truly gifted individual with high level of dedication for her research,” comments Pan.  “When she graduates, she wants to be a professor and I believe that she would be an excellent addition to the biomedical academic community."

Ostadhossein graduated summa cum laude from Sharif University of Technology in Iran with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in materials science and engineering. She joined Prof. Pan’s research group in Fall 2014 and earned a second master’s degree in bioengineering in December 2015. From her work in Prof. Pan’s lab, she has already authored or co-authored ten publications in peer-reviewed journals such as JACS, Advanced Functional Materials, Small, and Bioconjugate Chemistry, to name a few.
